Renting a pontoon boat is a definite must when visiting the Destin, Florida area. A pontoon boat can unlock many hidden treasures of the emerald coast that you would miss out on simply sitting beachside or poolside. You and 8-10 friends can head out onto Choctawhatchee Bay to enjoy one of the many beaches accessible only by water or head to everyone’s favorite spot, Crab Island, for a day of fun in 2-3 feet of water.
Things to do on a Pontoon Boat in Destin, FL
- Fish the bay which is chock full of Blue fish, Red Fish, Pompano and Sea trout but don’t forget your fishing license.
- Head to The Crab island sand bar, anchor and swim in the bay. During the summer season, this sandbar is full of vendors offering pizza, ice cream and even high quality t-shirts.
- Venture to a great bay front restaurant. Check out Dewey Destin’s Restaurant with two locations one on the bay side and one in the Destin Harbor. Both of these restaurants are accessible by boat and both offer very fresh fish. It’s one of my favorite restaurants in Destin, Florida.
- Noreaga point, on the left heading out to the ocean, offers an amazing beach or great fishing off the jetties.
Be Careful
- When renting a pontoon boat be careful to select a driver who will not be drinking for the day and who is the most experienced on navigating a boat.
- Have a plan, know where you are going before leaving the dock.
- be sure to select a rental company that maintains their boats. There are some rental companies who have very old and worn boats. These are harder to drive, much hard to steer, may leave you stranded and may increase your chances of getting hurt.
- Watch the weather, if the wind kicks up in the afternoon your trip can quickly turn from smooth sailing into Gilligan’s 3-hour tour. Watch the weather and be sure to stay close to the land to shelter your travelers from wind that can kick up the seas.
- Bring LOTS of water to drink, sunscreen to lather on and wear a hat.
