This lake is an outdoor paradise for visitors and locals alike, but it also has a long and interesting history that predates its modern-day popularity. From Native American settlements to the creation of the TVA reservoir, let’s explore the fascinating story behind Nottely Lake.
Nottely Lake was formed when Earth dammed up two tributaries of the Nottely River in 1942. Before this point, Nottley Lake was just part of the river system that ran through the area hundreds of years ago. The area was originally inhabited by Cherokees who used the river and its tributaries for hunting and trading with other tribes.
In 1940, Congress authorized the construction of Nottely Dam as part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The purpose of TVA was to develop hydroelectric power plants along rivers in order to provide electricity to rural areas throughout the South. The construction of Nottely Dam required flooding over 8,000 acres of land and displacing numerous families whose homes were within the new lake’s boundaries.
In spite of its controversial origins, Nottely Lake quickly became a popular destination for fishing, watersports, and camping. Today, it is home to numerous summer camps for children as well as a few small hotels and some amazing vacation rentals for tourists from around the world.
Nottely Lake is much more than just a beautiful place to visit; it’s also steeped in history stretching back centuries before its modern incarnation as a man-made reservoir. Its legacy speaks to both tragedy and triumph; while some communities were destroyed during its creation, today it stands as an example of how people can come together after difficult times to create something wonderful that brings joy to countless people each year. If you’re looking for an outdoor getaway with some historical context mixed in with your fun, then look no further than Nottely Lake!

With its crystal clear waters and abundance of bass and trout, it’s no wonder that this lake is one of the most popular fishing spots in the north Georgia area. If you’re planning on visiting Nottely Lake for some fishing, here’s what you need to know.
Nottely Lake is home to many varieties of freshwater fish, including striped bass, largemouth bass, catfish, spotted bass, rainbow trout, northern trout, sunfish, and crappie. The lake is known for its excellent fishing year-round; however, anglers should be aware that during the summer months (May through September) the lake can be prone to algal blooms which can reduce visibility and make fishing more difficult.
Nottely Lake gets particularly busy in the summertime—so if you want to beat the crowds and get some quality time on the lake then spring (March through May) or fall (September through November) would be your best bet. During these months you’ll still have plenty of opportunities for catching fish—just make sure to bring along your waders or a boat so that you can explore further out into the deeper waters where the larger fish tend to congregate.
The first spot to check out is known as “The Narrows”. This area is located near the dam where two narrow arms of the lake converge. The water here is crystal-clear and full of fish such as bass, catfish, bream, crappie, and more. It’s also one of the best spots for shore fishing so you don’t even need a boat to catch some great catches here.
Another great spot for fishing at Nottely Lake is called “Big Ridge”. This area has plenty of rocky points and coves which attract a wide variety of fish including smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, striped bass, bluegill, and more. It’s also a great spot for trolling during summer months when schools of fish are feeding close to shore.
Finally, “Licklog Creek” near the dam is another popular spot for anglers looking for big catches. The creek has a plentiful supply of catfish which makes it ideal for night fishing with lights or lures that glow in the dark. There are also plenty of other species found in Licklog Creek that can be targeted using traditional methods such as casting spinners or crankbaits into deep holes and eddies along its banks.
Nottely Lake offers some excellent fishing opportunities that any angler can enjoy no matter their skill level or experience with fishing. From The Narrows to Big Ridge and Licklog Creek, there are plenty of great spots to cast your line and have some fun catching fish at Nottely Lake! So grab your rods and tackle box and get ready for an epic day on the water!
