Alabama – Land of Adventure

More than just a catchy moniker or a standard Southern rock hymn, Sweet Home Alabama has a rich history. It’s a fitting description of one of the undiscovered gems of the South. Whether your passion is relaxing on one of the state’s stunning beaches, fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or one of the numerous pristine rivers or lakes, or something completely different, Alabama has something to offer just about everyone.

If you’re contemplating an Alabama adventure, there’s an amazing wealth of opportunities available to you. At KAI Traveler, we want to help you connect with the incredible outdoor areas where you can reconnect with Mother Nature. From the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains to stunning river valleys, vast lakes, pristine forests, and the azure waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Alabama welcomes you with open arms.

  • 70% of Alabama is covered in forest.
  • You’ll find 17 major river systems in the state.
  • Alabama boasts 1,438 navigable miles of river channels, more than any other state.
  • The state offers 23 public lakes.
  • Alabama’s Gulf Coast covers 60 miles but offers 600 miles of tidal shoreline.
Alabama’s Gulf Coast

For many, Alabama’s primary draw is its Gulf Coast. While the state might not have Florida’s sprawling coastline, it does offer plenty of options around Mobile and Baldwin. Replete with white sand beaches, gorgeous barrier islands, quiet getaways off the beaten path, and growing cities, it’s THE place to be for fishing, boating, and fun in the sun. Some of the top destinations here include Orange Beach, Dauphin Island, Gulf Shores, Mobile Bay, and Perdido Key, but there’s so much more worth exploring.

Alabama’s Lakes

While saltwater boating and fishing are big draws, don’t neglect Alabama’s other water-based attractions—dozens of lakes. These freshwater lakes give you many opportunities to enjoy boating, sunbathing, fishing, and much more. You’ll also find thousands of miles of shoreline where you can camp, hike, or just enjoy some time with your family.

Guntersville Lake is the largest in the state and is within easy reach of travelers from Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee. It stretches from Guntersville in the south to Bridgeport in the north, providing well over 100 miles of shoreline and acre-on-acre of water. And this is just one of the many options you’ll find.

Getting Around Alabama

Alabama might not be the largest state in the Union, but it’s big on adventure. From north to south and east to west, natural beauty is front and center. Thankfully, it’s easy to get where you need to go. Interstate 20 bisects the state east to west (northeast to southwest). I-85 will get you from Georgia to Montgomery. You can take I-565 south through the state, or I-65 southwest from Montgomery to Mobile. I-10 connects Alabama’s Gulf Coast with Florida to the east and Mississippi to the west, while I-59 will take you to Birmingham and points northeast within the state.
